伊拉克八年來的總理馬里基14日晚上表示，他決定讓賢，將位子讓給和他同屬「達瓦黨」的阿巴迪。馬里基由阿巴迪陪同，在電視上致詞說，他作此決定，是為了「維護國家的最高利益」，他不想引起任何流血。但他說，「我仍然是保衛伊拉克及其人民的戰士」。伊拉克總統馬蘇姆在本周一 (11 日)指派阿巴迪組閣，但馬里基一直拒絕離職。
